Application of Carbon Quantum Dots

Carbon Quantum Dots (CQD's) are now admixed to the Composite Anode Paint (CASTQ) and to the Embedding Zinc Anode Activating Binder (QEZAC). The admixed CQD’s, due to their versatile surface and superior electron transfer capabilities, lower polarization resistance and increase conductivity especially in dry environments assuring corrosion protection of the steel reinforcement also under ambient dry conditions, and furthermore increase adhesion strength.

The Composite Anode Paint and the Embedded Zinc Anode (EZ-Anode) are modified by the admixture of CQD's - resulting in CASTQ - Composite Quantum Anode Paint and to QEZAC - Quantum dot modified Embedding Zinc Activating Cement.

22 Years of Composite Anode Systems

First application of the Composite Anode System with the CAS-T paint as integral part was realized 1998 in Svolvaer, Oslo. Next installations were realized ona Arc-Bridge (Spittal a. d. Drau, Carinthia (A)) – Hollow-Box Girder Bridge (A7, Uttrichshausen (DE)) – Polder Bridge (Demmerik, Gagelweg (NL)) - Parking Deck (Austrian Central TV Station, Vienna (A))  Since then, in the Netherlands, more than 77 installations have been realized since 2016 (see paper presented by Hans van den Hondel at ICCRRR 2018, see the link below), 5 installations in Germany and 9 installations in Austria. The most representative projects are presented below.

Application on soffits of a parking garage in Rostock, Germany (April - July 2017)

The CAST3+ Composite Anode System was installed on about 700 m² on the soffits of an underground parking garage in Rostock, Herweghstrasse 20, Germany. Following that project, the CAST3+ Composite Anode System will be installed in the underground parking garage of the Deutsche Med on about 2000 m² on soffits, beams and on the parking deck. Both projects are realized by ZÜBLIN, the cathodic corrosion protection systems (CP) - CAST3+ Composite Anode System & MMO-titanium ribbon mesh anode - are installed by iCOR GmbH.

Cooperation with Ed. Züblin

CAS and Ed. Züblin AG concluded a cooperation agreement on the CAST3+ Composite Anode technology. Cooperation will be exclusively in Germany, France, Switzerland and Scandinavia.

History of system

CAS successfully developed a novel conductive paint, based on the since 16 years proven CAS-T+ paint. The novel conductive CAST3+ paint is the 3d step in the development of the CAS composite conductive paints and excels in durability (UV-resistant, high weathering resistance, limited frost-thaw salt resistance), compatibility with a large range of cover coatings including epoxy coatings, high electrical conductivity and superior anode performance. The conductive CAST3+ paint is usually applied in combination with the CAP 60 primer, based on the long time proven alumo-silicate composite paint system. The CAP 60 primer improves the adhesion of the CAST3+ paint, solidifies the concrete surface and increases the ionic conductivity of the concrete. The use of the CAP60 is recommended if high weathering resistance of the Composite Anode is required and is especially recommended for the corrosion protection of steel reinforcements  in carbonated concrete.

The CAST3+ composite conductive paint was evaluated along with two other products in a 3 year research project conducted by IBAC (RWTH Aachen) and by BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, Berlin) and is denominated as CBCC 2.

Reports on application for prestressed concrete beams in higway bridges in the Netherlands

Two independent reports on the application of the CAST3+ composite conductive paint for the cathodic corrosion protection of prestressed concrete beams in 30 highway bridges in the Netherlands were presented at the ICCRRR 2015 in Leipzig.

Application on soffits of a parking garage in Rheinfelden, Germany (November 2014)

The CAST3+ was applied November 2014 by Züblin  in a parking garage in Rheinfelden (Baden), Germany.

Application in the Netherlands (2011-2015)

The CAST3+ composite anode systems was applied since 2011 in 9 projects in the Netherlands - sea side appartements, swimming pools, beam heads of 30 highway viaducts, difficult to access concrete members of a bridge abutment, solar powered Composite Anode on a bridge and two parking decks. Details are presented. Projects are realized by Vogel Kathodische Bescherming B.V in cooperation with Corrosion Protection Supplies B.V.

Carbon Quantum Dot Modified EZ-Anode - New Generation of EZ-Anode
The Carbon Quantum Dot Modified EZ-Anode is currently applied for the protection of the basements of a power line along the highway of the florida keys.

Status of the EZ-Anode installations

The EZA system was choosen as an efficient, cost effective, reliable and durable corrosion protection of the steel reinforcement of balconies of sea side appartements in the Netherlands. In a first step the EZA is installed on the upperside of the balconies covering an area of 110 m2. The EZA is covered with a PU coating from BASF. Installation is executed by Vogel cathodic beschermig b.v., a subsidiary of Mourik (www.mourik.com).

The EZA anode is protecting steel in concrete efficiently and reliably at the Alplgraben bridge in Styria (A) after 7 winters and 6,5 years of operation under alpine weathering conditions, on concrete members of two bridges in the Netherlands (De Meernbrug Steel Bridge, 'Hubertusviaduct' in Den Haag) since 2008 respectively 2010. From June – August 2012, the Alplgrabenbridge has been subject to a general restoration and retrofitting. The EZA system was accepted by the owner, the Styrian road and bridge authority, as the reliable technical solution for stopping the corrosion of the steel reinforcement in the abutment of the Alplgrabenbridge. The last maintenance report was filed to the styrian road authority January 2016 proving full corrosion protection of the steel reinforcement. In August 2016, SUICOR evaluated the EZA installation at the parking deck at Saas Fee (installed July 2011) positively, the EZA protects the prestressed steel wires efficiently and reliably from corrosion. Results were be presented at the conference FIB 2016 Symposion in Cape Town, 21 - 23 November 2016.
